Mixed methods study on surgical care in rural areas of North-Eastern India

Conceived by the Global Health Research Group (GHRG), funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), UK, and led by the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development at the University of Leeds, UK, this project aimed to examine the current state of surgical care in four states of North-Eastern India.

Over a period of six months, from February 2019, The Highland Institute research team travelled to selected districts in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur and Nagaland visiting hospital facilities and interviewing four categories of stakeholders in the healthcare system. Both qualitative and quantitative assessment methods were used, and the data gathered will inform the design of future interventions to improve surgical care in India.

Specifically, the research focused on the healthcare system readiness to provide basic surgical care and the potential to provide laparoscopic (conventional or gasless) techniques for abdominal surgery.

Headed by Dr Michael Heneise, the project has concluded on 2019.
