Internship Programme

The Highland Institute's Internship Programme offers a unique opportunity for aspiring researchers to engage in community-based research in Highland Asia. Our programme combines intensive field training, theoretical learning, and practical research experience under the guidance of experienced scholars and Fellows.

Interns work on active research projects, develop their own research proposals, and gain valuable experience in ethnographic methods, research ethics, and collaborative knowledge production with local communities.

Overview, Timeline, and Eligibility

Programme Duration

The internship typically runs for 8-12 weeks during the summer months (May-August), with opportunities for extended engagement based on research needs and availability.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate students (final year) or recent graduates
  • Strong interest in community-based research and Highland Asia
  • Commitment to ethical research practices and community engagement
  • Basic research or fieldwork experience preferred but not required

Application Timeline

January - February: Applications Open

Submit your application with statement of interest and research proposal

March: Selection & Interviews

Shortlisted candidates interviewed by research mentors

April: Offer & Pre-Departure Preparation

Successful applicants receive offers and begin orientation

May-August: Programme Duration

Field research, workshops, and project completion

Postgraduate Certificate in Research (PGCertR)

Interns who successfully complete the programme can earn a Postgraduate Certificate in Research (PGCertR), a recognized qualification that demonstrates advanced research skills and methodological competence.

Certification Requirements

  • Complete 8-12 week internship programme
  • Submit final research report or publication draft
  • Present research findings at Institute seminar
  • Demonstrate ethical research practices and community engagement

The PGCertR is particularly valuable for those pursuing further graduate studies or careers in research, international development, or community-based work.
