Scholarly Community at the Highland Institute
The Highland Institute welcomes a diverse and vibrant community of fellows and visiting scholars, who contribute to the Institute’s interdisciplinary, collaborative, and field-oriented research culture. Whether through formal membership in the Highland Fellowship or as independent scholars visiting for specific research engagements, these individuals are integral to the intellectual life of the Institute.
Highland Fellowship
The Highland Fellowship comprises a growing network of scholars, researchers, and practitioners nominated for their sustained contribution to the intellectual mission of the Institute. Members of the Highland Fellowship are often involved in mentoring postgraduate students, leading collaborative research projects, and helping shape the Institute’s academic programmes and public engagements.
Fellows may also receive institutional support for hosting events, developing publications, or carrying out field-based research. While this page provides a general overview of fellowships and visiting scholars, more detailed information—including nomination criteria and current members—can be found on the dedicated Highland
Fellowship page.

Visiting Scholars
In addition to formal fellows, the Highland Institute hosts visiting scholars from around the world, including early-career academics, doctoral candidates, independent researchers, and faculty members from national and international universities. These scholars are typically self-funded and are welcomed to:
- Access the Institute’s library, digital archives, and workspaces
- Participate in the academic and cultural life of the Institute
- Present their work-in-progress at informal seminars or public events
- Engage with the Institute’s research staff, fellows, and students
Visiting scholars are encouraged to be active participants in the everyday rhythms of the Institute—joining field visits, engaging in discussion groups, or simply exchanging ideas over tea. While formal affiliations are not required, space availability and research alignment will be considered in all inquiries.
Project-Based Fellowships
Occasionally, the Institute is able to offer project-based research fellowships, supported by the Highland Fellowship or by external funding linked to specific academic collaborations. These are typically short-term, theme-specific opportunities open to scholars working in areas aligned with the Institute’s core research themes—such as medical pluralism, highland cosmologies, environmental knowledge, oral histories, and borderland politics.
Details on such opportunities, when available, will be posted on the Highland Fellowship page or announced via the Institute’s mailing list and website.
