Hands-On Research Development at The Highland Institute
Internships and training programmes at The Highland Institute have long served as vital components of our commitment to grounded, ethical, and context-specific research. While the formal Postgraduate Certificate in Research (PGCertR) now anchors our annual academic cycle, a wide range of targeted training sessions, project-based internships, and skill-building workshops continue to be offered throughout the year, many of which remain embedded within our collaborative research landscape.
Targeted Trainings and Capacity-Building
Throughout the year, the Institute regularly conducts training programmes tailored to specific research projects, including:
- Interview and field documentation techniques
- Development and refinement of topic guides
- Pilot testing of context-sensitive research tools and methodologies
- Workshops in data collection, transcription, and analysis
These trainings are typically designed for project-affiliated researchers, field assistants, and collaborators, and are usually not open to external applicants. However, in certain cases, participation may be arranged in coordination with project teams, and interested researchers may enquire directly with the Institute for upcoming opportunities.
Internships Linked to Research Projects
Occasionally, internship opportunities may be created for students and emerging scholars interested in participating in ongoing research projects. These internships are:
- Short-term and highly focused, offering immersion in specific thematic or methodological areas
- Organised in close collaboration with project leads and research coordinators
- Designed to provide practical, hands-on experience in field-based inquiry, analysis, or community engagement
Each internship is unique and reflects the specific contours of the research it supports. For information about internship availability, please contact the Institute directly.
Methodological Workshops by Visiting Scholars
As part of our ongoing collaboration with universities and research institutions across the world, the Highland Institute frequently hosts visiting scholars who conduct workshops and seminars on:
- Ethnographic and qualitative research methods
- Oral history and indigenous historiography
- Library and archival science
- Citizen science and participatory research
- Visual and material culture analysis
These sessions are often announced publicly and may be open to students, local researchers, or the wider community, depending on the format. Participants benefit from close interaction with international faculty and opportunities for peer learning across disciplines and institutions.
Community-Based Trainings and Outreach
In keeping with our commitment to locally rooted research, the Institute regularly conducts field-based workshops in rural settings. These training sessions often coincide with ongoing research activities and are held in collaboration with village councils, local schools, and grassroots organisations. In recent years, such programmes have included:
- Staff development and student seminars at Kohima Science College, Phek Government College, and other institutions across Nagaland
- Outreach sessions on citizen science, indigenous knowledge systems, and oral history
- Capacity-building in digital documentation, transcription, and archival practices
These workshops are generally arranged by request and in partnership with local institutions. Interested colleges, departments, or organisations are welcome to contact the Institute to explore possibilities for collaboration.
