The inaugural Ekologos Global Environmental Humanities Conference brought together scholars, artists, and community practitioners to explore the theme of deep collaboration in the Anthropocene. Held as part of the Highland Institute’s annual gathering, the event featured keynote lectures by Dr. Sahana Ghosh (NUS), Dr. Meera Baindur (RVU), Prof. Thomas Bøhn (IMR Norway), and Prof. Tiatoshi Jamir (Nagaland University), among others.

Workshops included immersive labs on speculative futures, more-than-human storytelling, audiovisual ethnography, and the ethics of digital heritage. Participants engaged in field excursions, story booths, and a Wiki-building initiative designed to preserve and curate Indigenous Ecological Knowledge (IEK).

The conference culminated in the 2023 Highlander Lecture (now ‘Bower Lectures’), delivered by Prof. Antonio Guerreiro on Kalapalo environmental knowledge systems in the Amazon. Over 100 participants from India, Norway, Brazil, and beyond attended.
